Amnesty International (AI) is the world’s leading non-governmental human rights organization. It was founded in London ‍ in July 1961 by two English lawyers Peter Benenson and Philip James.

He got the idea for the organization's logo - the lit candle surrounded by barbed wire - from a Chinese proverb,"It is better to light a light than to curse the darkness". Amnesty International was founded in London in 1961, following the publication of the article "The Forgotten Prisoners" in The Observer on 28 May 1961, by the lawyer-Peter Benenson. Amnesty draws attention to human rights abuses and campaigns for compliance with international laws and standards. Amnesty International expanded its mission in the 1990s and early 2000s to include supporting reproductive freedom, holding corporations responsible for human rights violations, and preserving human rights in national security policies in the wake of the September 11 attacks.
